Where is the "Most beautiful over-water highway" in China? You can find the place in Jiujiang, Jiangxi Province, which passes through Poyang Lake (鄱陽湖), like a dragon, stretching to the faraway place.
Such a beautiful scenery is also "limited in time" and needs to meet certain water level conditions to be seen, which attracts a lot of tourists every year.
Related to the water level of Poyang Lake?
The "Most Beautiful Over-water Highway" is the "Dahuchi Section" of Jiangxi Yongwu Highway (江西永吳公路).
The highway is 5.05 kilometres long, which passes through Poyang Lake.
Every year at the beginning of spring and summer, when the rainy season comes, the water level of Poyang Lake will rise, and the highway will be submerged.
Looking from a distance, the sky and the water merge in one colour. Vehicles travelling on the highway are like small boats "sailing against the wind and waves" on the sea, creating a unique landscape.
To ensure smooth traffic during the rainy season, a drainage system for the road is designed to prevent flooding in the rainy season.
According to the staff, when the water level of Poyang Lake reaches about 18.6 metres, the lake water submerges the surface of the highway just right and the road can be opened to traffic normally.
However, once the water level reaches the flood warning line (19 metres), the highway needs to be closed to traffic. At that time, tourists who want to enjoy the scenery of the over-water way, can go by boat.
The "over-water highway" only appears when the water level is just right. This limited beauty may only last for a few days. If you miss it, you will have to wait for another year.
On August 8 2024, the first day the road was reopened to traffic, there were more than 8,000 vehicles driving along the road, even causing a traffic jam.
Opened in 2013, Yongwu Highway connects the county town of Yongxiu in Jiangxi Province to the ancient town Wucheng.
Besides the over-water highway, it also passes through the famous Poyang Lake Migratory Birds Protection Area.
