The Changchun Film Festival (長春電影節) opened on 23 August, 1992.
The Changchun Film Festival is the first national-level film festival named after a city in Mainland China.
At that time, the Changchun Film Festival was scheduled to be held every two years. The first edition was aimed at "unity, friendship, exchange, and development", encompassing film activities, cultural activities, economic and trade technology activities, and tourism activities.
The first Changchun Film Festival did not have today's Golden Deer Award, but there were the Changchun Golden Cup and the Changchun Silver Cup.
The highest honour, the Golden Cup award, was won by the drama film The Story of Qiu Ju (《秋菊打官司》) directed by Zhang Yimou and starring Gong Li.
A total of 56 outstanding Chinese and foreign films were screened at this festival.
The Commodity Material and Technological Achievements Fair held simultaneously was also very fruitful, with a total trade volume of 5.5 billion RMB, 69 joint venture projects, and the use of foreign investment exceeding 170 million USD.
