Shenzhen has a new cultural landmark! The Shenzhen Museum of International Art, located in the the heart of Guangming Science City (光明科學城), opened to the public on 30 May 2026.
As one of the city's "Major Cultural Facilities of the New Era," the museum is positioned as a national-level, world-class venue. Its official mission is to serve as "an artistic window to the world" and "a cultural hub for international art." Let's take a closer look at its cross-cultural aesthetic.
Curves and stone interpret Sino-western aesthetics
On Guanghui Avenue, in the heart of Shenzhen's Guangming Science City, two magnificent "arks" catch the eye with their radiant presence.
This is the newly completed Shenzhen Museum of International Art—one of the "Major Cultural Facilities of the New Era" that the city has been carefully planning since 2019.
The two "arks" were designed under the leadership of Cui Kai, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, with the concept of "pulling together in the same boat". The building's form, two arks set slightly apart, side by side, is what gives it its name.
Cui Kai explains that the north building takes inspiration from Chinese landscape painting. Its curved form isn't purely geometric—it mirrors the gentle rise and fall of distant mountains.
Glass and metal blend across the façade, catching the light in ways that make the building feel like a living ink wash painting.
The South Hall is a different story altogether. Its heavy stone facade, cut into clean geometric shapes, feels solid and solemn—like a classic Western gallery.
The North Hall and South Hall, one bold and one gentle, together embody a harmonious meeting of East and West.
Between the two arks, look up and you'll see the striking "Moon Gate." Hundreds of metal cables hang down like streams of moonlight, while acrylic panels, softly lit, create a dreamy halo effect.
As the sun moves across the sky, the changing light and shadow trace the full cycle of the moon's phases—bringing a touch of nature into the heart of the architecture.
Notably, the Shenzhen Science and Technology Museum—another "major cultural facility of the new era"—stands right next to the art museum.
The North Hall of the art museum also faces a large science park. Together, the three form a landmark cluster of culture, art, and science in Guangming District.
More than Exhibitions: A space for learning, research, and art
In addition to its stunning architectural exterior, the internal functions of the Shenzhen Museum of International Art are equally impressive.
The museum has a total floor area of around 135,000 square metres, with seven storeys above ground and two below.
It is a multi-functional arts complex that brings together exhibitions, public education, research and collections, international exchange, digital art platforms, and cultural industry development.
Inside, the museum devotes about 48,000 square metres to exhibitions across 15 international-standard halls—from high-ceiling and bonded storage galleries to digital spaces.
Together, they create a versatile, professional system ready for international art collections of any scale.
The venue also boasts two "world-class" facilities.
The first is a 12,000-square-metre collection storage facility with international standards, offering professional protection for global artworks through climate control and high security—like a "safe deposit box" for art.
In addition, the bonded storage gallery allows overseas artworks to be exhibited and traded tax-free, acting as an "international transit hub" for art.
Beyond its core functions, the venue also features diverse spaces for performance and learning: a 700-seat indoor theatre and an outdoor stage, a 200-seat lecture hall with a library and archive, plus a 3,000-square-metre education area, a children's art museum, and artist studios—designed for audiences of every age.
The museum also offers dining, relaxation, and art retail across an additional 11,000 square metres of space.
Whether you come for exhibitions, research, or a casual day out, the venue caters to all ages and tastes—a true all-rounder in the art world.
Seven inaugural exhibitions: National treasures and world-class art
The "national-level" and "world-class" status of the Shenzhen International Art Museum can also be experienced through the seven exhibitions presented at its opening.
Leading the line-up is the special exhibition National Treasures Returned – The Old Summer Palace Animal Heads and the Material Memory of Ancient China.
It brings together seven original Old Summer Palace animal heads—ox, tiger, monkey, pig, horse, rat, and rabbit—in a single display, making it the largest exhibition of authentic animal heads in China in recent years.
The show is further enriched by 76 precious artefacts, including Shang and Zhou bronzes and Northern Dynasties stone carvings, which together trace the material memory of Chinese civilisation across thousands of years.
Another highlight is Realm of the Masters: Art Treasures from Five Centuries from the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest, featuring original works by Renaissance greats like Titian and Tintoretto.
This is the first time this collection has been exhibited on a large scale in Shenzhen, and it is also a major event in China-Europe cultural exchange.
Also on view are exhibitions featuring modern masters from the CAFA Art Museum collection—Qi Baishi, Zhang Daqian, and Xu Beihong among them—alongside Xu Bing's solo show Amusement Park of Chinese Characters, international works in New Chain: The Future of Art, and the inaugural Shenzhen Art and Technology Biennale, Glimmering 1/∞.
From ancient to contemporary, Chinese to Western, the seven exhibitions together offer a rich and diverse feast of artistic expression.
Among the "major cultural facilities of the new era," the Shenzhen Museum of International Art is undoubtedly a standout.
