On May 1, a "large spaceship" arrived in Guangming Science City, Shenzhen. It is the Shenzhen Science and Technology Museum.
This "spaceship" has a construction area of about 130,000 square meters, equivalent to 11 Hong Kong Science Museums, with numerous immersive technology experiences.
Why does the new museum look like a spaceship? Any highlights? How to make a reservation? Let's check it out for now.
New museum designed by Zaha Hadid Architects
Looking at the outlook of the building, the Shenzhen Science and Technology Museum (New Building) is already filled with a sense of technology.
Designed by the internationally renowned Zaha Hadid Architects, the building resembles a colossal interstellar spacecraft, spanning a total construction area of nearly 130,000 square meters, with 6 floors on the ground, 2 floors underground, and the atrium reaches a height of 33 meters.
It is poised to become a central landmark for scientific exploration in Shenzhen and the Greater Bay Area.
The "spaceship's" curtain wall spans over 60,000 square meters and is composed of more than 90,000 stainless steel panels of various sizes.
Under the sun's reflection, it can simulate cosmic phenomena such as auroras, nebulae, and flares, which is said to be one of the highlights.
950 Fun high-tech interactive exhibits
The museum has five storeys high on the ground. The first floor is a technological cinema, primarily for movies. There is also an AI (artificial intelligence) robot restaurant there that creates an unmanned dining scene, which is very attractive.
From the second to the fifth floor, there are four permanent exhibition halls featuring 950 exhibits, many of which are independently innovated technologies from all over China.
The second floor's theme is "Hello, World!" and a "Giant Eye" is a must-see one that floor, for it showcases the essence of high technology worldwide.
The third floor's theme is "Better Life Exhibition Hall," with exhibits mainly including communications technology, digital art, AI, and technological security. There is also a robotic "barista" here that is quite eye-catching.
The fourth floor is the "Smart Industry Exhibition Hall," showcasing technologies related to logistics, healthcare, and industrial production, together with interactive installations.
A must-try is the remote surgery simulator, in which you can perform a remote surgery on a "patient" lying on the operating table, pretending to be a real "doctor" doing surgery.
The fifth floor is dedicated to ‘Exploring the Source of the Universe’" which mainly displays cutting-edge technologies in genetics, astronomy, aviation, and space.
This floor has dimmer lighting overall, giving a feeling of being in outer space.
Why start the tour from the top floor?
Because the third and fourth floors have more timed projects, it is recommended to start from the top floor and proceed downwards to better calculate waiting times and participate in more activities.
The stunning twelve-storey high atrium
Besides the eye-catching technological experiences, the 33-meter-tall atrium, which is over twelve stories high, is also a highlight.
This large "atrium" has surprisingly no pillars supporting it, marking another breakthrough in technological architecture.
According to relevant experts, during the construction process, the team utilized high-tech technology for precise modeling and analysis, ensuring seamless integration of design and construction.
During the critical large-span steel truss construction, the team accurately guided the process through BIM (Building Information Modelling) three-dimensional risk calculations, successfully lifting the 2,200-tonne "steel ceiling" from the second floor to a height of 33 meters to the roof, achieving a "column-free" atrium in the building.
If you visit the Shenzhen Science and Technology Museum, don't miss this architectural achievement!
