With the development of globalisation and the progress of human society, the connections between countries around the world have been deepening, and they also face many common challenges.
To address these challenges, China has proposed the concept of "A Global Community of Shared Future". This article will introduce this concept, as well as the related actions and achievements.
A Global Community of Shared Future: The "Five Major Goals"
Today, international strategic competition is intensifying; the global economic recovery is sluggish; unilateralism and protectionism are rampant; energy and food crises are worsening, and governing climate change is becoming ever more urgent.
To tackle these global challenges, the strength of a single country is far from enough. For this reason, China has proposed a "Chinese solution" for the world — A Global Community of Shared Future (人類命運共同體).
In 2013, Chinese President Xi Jinping first proposed this concept on a diplomatic occasion. In 2017, "A Global Community of Shared Future" was written into a UN General Assembly resolution for the first time.
According to the "White Paper", in the definition it provides, "A Global Community of Shared Future" is one where all peoples, all countries, and all individuals – our destinies being interconnected – must stand together in adversity and through thick and thin, navigating towards greater harmony on this planet that we call home.
We should endeavour to build an open, inclusive, clean and beautiful world that enjoys lasting peace, universal security, and common prosperity, turning people's longing for a better life into reality.
From its initial proposal in 2013, to the proposal of the "five-in-one" overall framework in 2015, and then to the overarching goal of building "five worlds" proposed in 2017, the ideological connotation of "A Global Community of Shared Future" has been continuously deepened and expanded.
Among these, the goal of the "five worlds" has laid out the plan for A Global Community of Shared Future from the five major aspects of politics, security, economy, culture, and ecology.
A Global Community of Shared Future: How does China take action?
Over the past decade or so, the concept of A Global Community of Shared Future has been steadily put into practice. What contributions has China made in this process?
From implementing the "Three Global Initiatives", to actively taking action in international cooperation in various fields, and then to advancing the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), China not only has the concept of A Global Communication of Shared Future, but also concrete actions.
For example, in terms of implementing the "Three Global Initiatives" (the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilisation Initiative), China, as a mainstay in safeguarding world peace, has nearly 1,800 peacekeepers as of Aug 2025, ranking first among the five permanent members of the Security Council.
As of July 2025, China has contributed over 49,000 person-times of peacekeeping officers and soldiers.
In the face of hotspot issues, China has also always been committed to playing the role of a responsible major country, promoting the resolution of international and regional issues.
In international cooperation in various fields such as public health and climate change, China has also put forward abundant proposals and translated them into concrete actions.
When the COVID-19 pandemic was raging, China shared its anti-pandemic experience and medical technology with countries around the world, and provided necessary medical supplies, including supplying over 280 billion masks, over 3.4 billion protective suits, and over 4 billion test kits.
China also promised to make vaccines a global public good, benefiting many developing countries.

Facing the challenge of global climate change, in 2020, China proposed to the world the goal of achieving the "dual carbon" targets, committing to strive to peak carbon emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060.
This goal has been incorporated into the country's overall development plan and has made significant progress.
In addition, the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative is also a practice of A Global Communication of Shared Future.
Since 2013, when the Belt and Road Initiative was proposed, China has signed cooperation documents with more than 150 countries and over 30 international organisations, launched more than 3,000 cooperation projects, and promoted the development of co-building countries and regions.
A Global Community of Shared Future: China promotes world development with its own development
At the same time, as a large country with a population of 1.4 billion, China also insists on promoting world development with its own development.
China is committed to promoting the building of an open world economy to better align the interests of China and other countries. Currently, China has become a major trading partner for over 150 countries and regions.
In 2024, China's total import and export value reached 43.85 trillion RMB, ranking first in the world for many consecutive years.
At the same time, China also hosts a series of major exhibitions, such as the China International Import Expo (CIIE), the China International Consumer Products Expo (CICPE), the China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS), and the Canton Fair, to promote the sharing of China's institutional opening-up opportunities with all countries and parties.
Today, shared interests, shared challenges, and shared responsibilities have bound the futures and destinies of all countries more closely together.
China is taking concrete actions to strengthen coordination and cooperation with other countries, jointly moving towards A Global Communication of Shared Future.
