China commended "Two Bombs and One Satellite" scientists

On September 18, 1999, China government commended the scientists who made outstanding contributions to the "Two Bombs and One Satellite" project(兩彈一星). 23 people were awarded the "Two Bombs and One Satellite Merit Award" at the Great Hall of the People.

These 23 people are Yu Min(于敏), Wang Daheng(王大珩), Wang Xiji(王希季), Zhu Guangya(朱光亞), Sun Jiadong(孫家棟), Ren Xinmin(任新民), Wu Ziliang(吳自良), Chen Fangyun(陳芳允), Chen Nengkuan(陳能寬), Yang Jiachi(楊嘉墀), Zhou Guangzhao(周光召), Qian Xuesen(錢學森), Tu Shou'e(屠守鍔), Huang Weilu(黃緯祿), Cheng Kaijia(程開甲), Peng Huanwu(彭桓武), posthumously awarded to Wang Ganchang(王淦昌), Deng Jiaxian(鄧稼先), Zhao Jiuzhang(趙九章), Yao Tongbin(姚桐斌), Qian Ji(錢驥), Qian Sanqiang(錢三強), Guo Yonghuai(郭永懷).

The award ceremony was held in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. During his speech, the then state president Jiang Zemin pointed out that in order for China to achieve its grand goals of development across the century and truly safeguard national sovereignty and security, there must be continuous improvement in economic strength, scientific and technological strength, and defense strength, as well as increase in national cohesion.

Jiang Zemin also claimed that the Chinese people have the courage, confidence, wisdom, and strength to stand at the forefront of global technological progress, and that China must always aim for international advanced levels, vigorously implement the strategy of rejuvenating the country through science and education, and strive for new leaps in scientific and technological endeavors.

The spirit of "Two Bombs and One Satellite" was also formally proposed by Jiang Zemin at this time, and is summed up as "love for the motherland, selfless dedication, self-reliance, hard struggle, vigorous collaboration, and courage to climb."
