The first metro line in Shanghai started operation

On May 28, 1993, the southern section of Shanghai Metro Line 1 from Jinjiang Amusement Park to Xujiahui Station began trial operation, making it the first metro line in Shanghai and Shanghai the third city in China to have a metro after Beijing and Tianjin.

Shanghai Metro Line 1 is one of the busiest and most important arterial routes of Shanghai's rail transit system. As early as 1958, Shanghai started the preliminary preparations for the construction of Line 1.

On January 19, 1990, with the consent of the State Council and approval of the National Development and Planning Commission, the construction of Shanghai Metro Line 1 officially began. The section from Jinjiang Amusement Park to Xujiahui Station, with a total length of 6.6 kilometres, marked the ground-breaking advancement of Shanghai's rail transit.

The first phase of Shanghai Metro Line 1 began trial operation on April 10, 1995, and subsequently, its southern extension, northern extension, and further northern extension were sequentially completed and opened.

To date, Shanghai Metro Line 1 covers a total length of 38.18 kilometres, beginning at Xinzhuang Station in Minhang District and ending at Fujin Road Station in Baoshan District, with a total of 28 stations set up along the route.
