China's first large-scale commercial nuclear power plant put into operation

On May 3, 2004, the second unit of Qinshan Nuclear Power Phase II (秦山核電站二期) was officially put into commercial operation.

At the time, Qinshan Nuclear Power Phase II was the only domestically produced project among China's nuclear power plant constructions. It is China's first large-scale commercial nuclear power plant that was independently designed, constructed, managed, and operated.

The Qinshan Nuclear Power Phase II plant is located in Haiyan County, Zhejiang Province, with a designed installed capacity of two 600,000 kW pressurised water reactor nuclear power units, and a total investment of 14.8 billion RMB.

The main project of Qinshan Nuclear Power Phase II commenced on June 2, 1996. The first unit was put into commercial operation ahead of schedule on April 15, 2002.

The commissioning of the second unit marks China's significant leap from the independent construction of small prototype reactors to independently constructing large-scale commercial nuclear power plants.
