Shanghai's Oriental Pearl Tower began broadcasting

On May 1, 1995, the Oriental Pearl Tower in Shanghai began broadcasting.

The Oriental Pearl Tower is one of Shanghai's iconic cultural landmarks, located in Lujiazui, Pudong New Area. Upon completion, it was the tallest tower in Asia and the 3rd tallest in the world.

The Oriental Pearl Tower stands 468 metres tall and is composed of 11 spheres of varying sizes and heights.

On August 25, 1983, the Shanghai Broadcasting Bureau, in a report, outlined the basic situation of Shanghai's broadcasting and television, detailing the current TV transmission towers' inability to bear the burden and first proposed the idea of constructing a new TV tower.

Subsequently, on November 17 of the same year, the submitted "6th and 7th Five-Year Plans and 10-Year Vision for the Development of Shanghai Broadcasting and Television" clearly suggested "constructing a TV frequency modulation transmission tower approximately 400 metres tall during the '7th Five-Year Plan'" and even preliminarily considered the site, which was either within or near Lujiazui's Pudong Park.

On March 25, 1984, in the government work report delivered at the 2nd session of the 8th Shanghai People's Congress, it was formally announced that Shanghai would build a new TV transmission tower.
