China announced establishment of Xiong'an New Area

On April 1, 2017, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council issued a notice, deciding to establish the Xiong'an New Area (雄安新區) in Hebei Province.

The notice stated that Xiong'an New Area, after the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone and Shanghai Pudong New Area, is another area of national significance.

The planning scope of Xiong'an New Area involves Xiongxian County, Rongcheng County, Anxin County in Hebei Province, and some surrounding areas, located in the hinterland of Beijing, Tianjin, and Baoding.

The purpose of establishing Xiong'an New Area is to create a centralised area for the non-capital functions of Beijing.

According to the plan of the Xiongan New Area, specific zones have been designated as starting areas.

The starting area covers about 100 square kilometres; the mid-term development area covers about 200 square kilometres, and the long-term control area covers about 2,000 square kilometres.

The planning and construction of Xiong'an New Area focuses on seven key tasks: building a green and smart new city, creating an ecological city, developing high-end and high-tech industries, providing high-quality public services, building a fast and efficient transportation network, and promoting comprehensive and all-around opening up.
