On September 19, 2000, the comprehensive renovation project of Fu-Nan River(府南河) in Chengdu, Sichuan, along with its related supporting projects, won an international award, ''Dubai International Award for Best Practices to Improve the Living Environment''.
The Fu-Nan River originates from the Gohorse River(走馬河) of the Minjiang River(岷江) system.
In Chengdu, it forms the Fu River and the Nan River. The Fu River flows north, and the Nan River circles the south, converging at the Hejiang Pavilion(合江亭) and proceeds east.
The Fu-Nan River was once described as a 'rotten river', with a popular saying stating, 'In the fifties, people used the water for washing rice and cooking, in the sixties, water quality deteriorated, in the seventies, fish and shrimps disappeared, and in the eighties, it was fit only for cleaning toilet lids'. According to records, in 1985, there were as many as 650 sewage outlets along the two banks of the Fu-Nan River, discharging over 600,000 tonnes of sewage each day.
Starting from 1992, Chengdu decided to revamp the Fu-Nan River, putting water management at the heart of the effort, aiming to comprehensively improve the city's living environment and urban infrastructure.
The comprehensive renovation project of the Fu-Nan River has won many international awards, including the ''UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour award'' and the ''Dubai International Award for Best Practices to Improve the Living Environment''.
