KMT chairman Lien Chan visited Mainland China

From April 26 to May 3, 2005, Kuomintang Chairman Lien Chan (連戰) visited the Mainland China.

Lien Chan was the first highest leader of the Kuomintang (KMT) to set foot on the Mainland China after 1949, and this visit marked the first highest-level meeting between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party of China (CPC) since the Chinese Civil War.

Lien Chan and a group of nearly 70 people departed from Taipei that day, embarking on an eight-day "Journey of Peace."

After transferring in Hong Kong, they arrived at Nanjing Airport at around 4 p.m. the same afternoon, and were met by Director of the Taiwan Affairs Office Chen Yunlin (陳雲林), along with several Jiangsu provincial party leaders, as well as dozens of Taiwanese business association presidents from within the province.

During this trip, Lien Chan also went to Beijing to meet with Hu Jintao (胡錦濤), the General Secretary of the CPC. The two sides first held talks at the Great Hall of the People, followed by a banquet hosted by Hu Jintao at Yingtai in Zhongnanhai.
