On January 6, 1992, the Memorial Hall of Zhou Enlai (周恩來), late Chinese premier, was completed and opened to the public.
The Memorial Hall of Zhou Enlai is located in Taohuayin, Huai'an, Jiangsu Province, which is also his birthplace.
The construction of the hall was approved by the Central Publicity Department in March 1986, and the name of the hall was personally inscribed by Deng Xiaoping. It serves as a national demonstration base for patriotic education.
Having served as the Premier of China for 26 years, Zhou was the first Premier after the founding of the People's Republic of China. He has been deeply loved by the people, and earned the title "Premier of the People."
The Memorial Hall of Zhou Enlai has undergone several expansions. In 1998, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Zhou Enlai's birth, a replica of the Xihua Hall in Beijing's Zhongnanhai, and the Zhou Enlai Bronze Statue Plaza were added.
By 2008, to commemorate the 110th anniversary of his birth, it was expanded to include the Zhou Enlai Life and Achievement Exhibition Hall, and the Xihua Garden Stele Park was newly constructed.
The bronze statue of Zhou Enlai, including its base, stands approximately 7.6 metres tall. It was created by the famous sculptor and professor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Li Shouren (李守仁), and was inspired by Zhou Enlai's habitual standing posture while conversing with the public in the 1950s and 1960s.
The inscription "Zhou Enlai Comrade" on the base was written by Jiang Zemin (江澤民), the then General Secretary of the Communist Party of China.
