On December 5, 1996, Mount Lu or Lushan (廬山) was listed in the UNESCO World Heritage sites as a "Cultural Landscape," marking the first for China.
Located in the southern suburbs of Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province, Lushan has a total area of 302 square kilometres. Among its over 90 peaks, the highest is Dahanyang Peak (大漢陽峰), with an altitude of 1,474 metres.
The scenery of Lushan is renowned for its "uniqueness, elegance, steepness, and grandeur," earning it the prestigious reputation of being a "place of the immortals."
According to the evaluation of UNESCO World Heritage Committee, Lushan is one of the spiritual centres of Chinese civilisation, "Buddhist and Taoist temples, along with landmarks of Confucianism, where the most eminent masters taught, blend effortlessly into a strikingly beautiful landscape which has inspired countless artists who developed the aesthetic approach to nature found in Chinese culture".
