On January 21, 1996, Beijing West Railway Station (北京西站) commenced operations.
Beijing West Railway Station is one of the four major railway passenger stations in Beijing, and at the time, it was one of the largest modern railway passenger stations in Asia.
The construction of the Beijing West Railway Station was conceived as early as 1959.
It had gone through three rounds of planning and research, but the first two were shelved due to political or economic reasons. The third attempt started in 1989 and finally received approval from the state for implementation.
Jointly funded by the Beijing Municipal Government and the Ministry of Railways, the station was one of the key projects in China's "8th Five-Year Plan," with a total investment of RMB 6.5 billion.
Beijing West Railway Station is one of the city's transportation hubs, with bus terminals in both the North and South Plazas where numerous buses originate.
Additionally, there are taxi and metro stations constructed underground.
Furthermore, Beijing West Railway Station is the leading project of the Beijing-Kowloon Railway, with passenger trains departing from the station directly reaching Hong Kong's Kowloon.
