On 22nd September 1990, the Beijing Asian Games opened.
The 11th Asian Games was not only the first time in the 40 years since the inception of the Asian Games to be hosted by China, but also the first time China had hosted a comprehensive international multi-sport event.
The Beijing Asian Games had as many as 36 competing delegations; with the exception of Jordan and Iraq, all other members of the Olympic Council of Asia sent teams to attend.
There were 6,122 athletes, who participated in a total of 27 competitive sports and 2 demonstration sports.
On the medal table, China firmly topped the rankings with 183 gold medals, while South Korea and Japan were 2nd and 3rd respectively.
The mascot for the Beijing Asian Games was "Pan Pan" (盼盼), in the form of a giant panda holding a medal. The prototype for Pan Pan was the giant panda "Basi" (巴斯) from the Fuzhou Panda Research Centre, and the designer was National First-Class Artist Liu Zhongren.
