First Teachers' Day in New China

On September 10, 1985, citizens in Beijing celebrated the first Teachers' Day since the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC).

As early as 1932, the Republic of China government had designated June 6 as Teachers' Day. After the founding of the PRC, authorities abolished the June 6 observance and designated May 1 (International Labour Day) as Teachers' Day.

However, since no separate celebrations were held for Teachers' Day at that time, the holiday received little public attention.

It was not until January 21, 1985, that the 9th Session of the 6th National People's Congress Standing Committee approved the State Council's proposal to establish a Teachers' Day, formally designating September 10 as Teachers' Day.

This date was chosen because it coincides with the start of the new academic year for universities, secondary schools, and primary schools nationwide. It aims to foster a fresh atmosphere in schools and create a conducive environment for "teachers to teach well and students to learn well."

The original intent behind establishing Teachers' Day in China was to further elevate the political and social status of teachers, gradually making teaching one of the most respected and enviable professions in society.

This aimed to foster a social ethos of respecting teachers, valuing education, honouring knowledge, and appreciating talent, thereby enhancing the scientific and cultural literacy of the entire Chinese nation.

Since then, celebrations for Teachers' Day have been held nationwide around September 10 each year. Grand commendation ceremonies are convened to honour outstanding educators and institutions that have made significant contributions to promoting respect for teachers and education.

Governments at all levels, various industries, and student unions take this occasion to express heartfelt gratitude to teachers. National leaders also personally visit primary and secondary schools to extend their regards to educators.
