China's Gaofen-2 satellite was launched

On August 19, 2014, China's Gaofen-2 (高分2號) satellite was launched into space.

Gaofen-2 is one of the first satellites developed under the major national project of the High-Resolution Earth Observation System. It was also, at that time, the civil remote sensing satellite with the highest spatial resolution, widest observation swath, and longest design life developed by China.

Gaofen-2 is equipped with two high-resolution cameras, including a 1-metre panchromatic and a 4-metre multispectral camera.

It features sub-metre spatial resolution, high positioning accuracy, and rapid attitude manoeuvre capabilities, effectively enhancing the satellite's comprehensive observation performance.

Gaofen-2 has a spatial resolution better than 1 metre, with the nadir spatial resolution reaching 0.8 metres. It is China's highest-resolution civilian land observation satellite, marking the entrance of China's remote sensing satellites into the sub-metre "high-resolution era".

The main users of Gaofen-2 include the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, the Ministry of Transport, and the State Forestry Administration.

It also provides demonstration application services to other user departments and relevant regions.
